Photograph by O. Pierre Havens, Virginia, about 1862 or 1863.
Ostendorf3 (p116)
Assigns the photograph to the Sept. 1862 - Feb. 1863 time period.

It is herein assigned arbitrarily to September for the following reasons:

  • So that it is distinguished from the Antietam October pictures.
  • The weather is apparently mild enough to allow everyone to sit outside with ease, which would not typically be the case in the Washington area in December, January, or February.
  • There are still leaves on the tree, lush even, which would not be the case from November onwards. The leaf coverage of trees in the Antietam October pictures looks thinner.
